The Jargon Explained...
The BTEC award defines the skills you need in the workplace therefore you will appreciate that your work MUST directly relate to your practice. Learners study real-life, work-based case studies and complete projects and assessments, which contribute to the achievement of each unit.
BTEC encourages learning by doing, drawing on materials gained from the working environment or industry wherever possible.
A range of delivery methods will be used. These could include:
Project work carried out as an individual or as part of a group
Work-based learning
Lectures and seminars
Facilitated activities
Visits to companies with a facilitator to structure the visit
Visiting speakers from the vocational sector as the 'client'
A range of assessment methods will be used. These could include:
Set tasks which allow candidates to demonstrate what they know, understand and can do so that they have opportunities to achieve the highest possible grades on their BTEC courses.
Ensure that candidates are clear about the criteria they are expected to meet in their assignments and that they are fully briefed on the skills which need to be demonstrated in the coursework/portfolio components of a subject.
Encourage candidates by giving detailed feedback and guidance on how to improve work.
Set interim deadlines for coursework and advise candidates on the appropriate amount of time to spend on the work.
Mark and return drafts within a set time frame.
Ensure each candidate signs to confirm that the work is their own and that it is endorsed by the assessor after marking the work.
Meet with the candidate formally on a regular basis.
Build strong working relationships with the candidates workplace managers.
Identify how past experience and achievements of the candidate may contribute to the assessment process.
Be aware of and follow the requirements of the Appeals procedure.
Internal Verifier
The Internal Verifier's role is to ensure that internally assessed work consistently meets national standards but can also lead to staff development and quality improvement.
Internal Verifiers have the knowledge and qualifications relevant to the qualification(s) and other competence-based award(s) for which they are responsible, to enable accurate judgements to be made regarding candidate performance in relation to competence criteria.
External Verifier
The External Verifier is appointed by the Awarding Body to visit the centre at intervals throughout the year.
The External Verifier may ask to see samples of your work to ensure that you are progressing through your qualification accordingly.
The External Verifier has the responsibility to sample the assessment and also the Centre processes.
The External Verifier can sample work from any candidate registered with the Centre.
